Dr Ritika: Chandigarh Surgeon and Fitness Influencer

Hi, I am a Maxillofacial Surgeon and fitness enthusiast. I practice Head and Neck Surgery at INDUS HOSPITALS where I am also promoter and Director.
My field of Specialization is Trauma, Head and Neck Cancer for which I got advanced training from Royal College of Surgeons -Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Born and brought up in New Delhi, I moved to Chandigarh after marriage, currently residing with inlaws, husband, and two kids. I did begin my career from teaching at an Academic institution after which I moved on to find my own path.

I do have various surgery articles published and received multiple awards for the same.
Even won the all India fitness challenge in Mumbai. it was an amazing experience but I knew it wasn’t for me. I wanted something else something different
I have always been an average child who was fat. I am one of those who you would say wasn’t born talented at all but I have worked for what you might call multi-talented.
In a single day, I can manage surgery, baking, kids’ work, and my workouts.

So friends ask me how I manage all this?
First, I had to make a team, my job though can be a single man job but being a mom, wife, and woman… I realized that just doing surgery or taking care of kids or just taking care of me didn’t make me happy… I need to do all. I joined hands with another maxillofacial fitness enthusiast. Never looked back…

Second, everyday one sets priorities for what will dominate: work or family or fitness. But I try to do all…it’s just that someday one has to let go of something somedays you don’t

Third family support. My family is equally proud if I make something good to eat or the day I do amazing surgery.

My Fitness Journey

My fitness journey started as a child when I was an obese kid. I was mocked while walking down the street. I had no idea what was wrong with me or my diet and none of the ‘skinny’ girls offered to help.

I started at age 16….but at that time bananas were bad, rice was bad and wheat and milk were good. ( now it’s the other way round)
The concept, the style of exercise also changes every few years. I started collecting international health magazines to get some ideas.
I’ve heard the digital world is bad… But it only changed my world for the better. Being an introvert I could make friends easily without much talking.

My sister made me start Instagram and Facebook accounts. it just opened up a whole new world. I learned amazing things, met amazing people ….no country, race, caste, creed, or any bias!!!!

I learned about nutrition, workouts, and yoga via digital platform. lost 35 to 40 kgs post pregnancy ….twice !!

But the actual journey started at 34. Career and fitness wise. Kids were in school . I could explore life so much more .My surgical team grew and flourished. We started doing rare and difficult cases .

Healthwise I understood what food works and what workouts are good. I still feel strange when people ask for fitness advice. In my mind am still a dumb fat Delhi girl, but I make sure i help or guide whoever approaches me. I remember I had no one to guide or help. Instagram helps me learn and help on the same platform. though it’s a filtered platform…that’s why the name @dr.ritsfilterlife. I love fashion….here I get an opportunity to mix fitness and fashion. I have amazing followers with so much positivity and love.

With so much negativity around I make sure my blog/insta brings happiness to people’s lives… I try adding humor to as many posts as I can. I have followers telling me, my one-liners or exercise page brightens their day. They specially go thru my daily posts as its fun or inspirational

That’s all I aim for- to receive and spread happiness but in style …yes style is very important for me 🙂
Instagram has been here for years, I realized that I love people who share or teach their experiences. I started sharing my workouts and yoga poses..and if anyone asks make tutorials. I am not a natural learner. I take a long time to learn..like headstand i learnt in 2 years and handstand in 6 years. which is very uncommon…people learn them in less than half the time. It gives me immense pleasure when followers send me video or pics of what they achieved after seeing my page or post.

My instablog is somewhere I learn and share….am not here for followers or other magic stuff…just having fun and sharing fun.
Why does everyone say think out of the box……somethings wrong with the box then…make your own box.
