Acne is one of the most common problems most people face. One of the most used and efficient solutions for acne is chemical peeling. It is a quick and non-surgical treatment. In fact, they are called lunchtime peels because they can be done in lunchtime breaks!
In chemical peel treatments, a chemical mixture is applied to the skin. The mixture causes the old skin to blister for a few days. Slowly the old skin peels off, giving way to new clear skin. With the old skin, the acne scars also disappear, leaving behind smoother new skin.
There are three different types of chemical mixtures usually used for chemical peels: Phenyl peel, Alpha-hydroxy acid or Glycolic acid (AHA), and Trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Glycolic acid is the lightest chemical. Peels are also divided as – light peels (also called superficial peels), medium peels, and deep peels, which permeate through the skin at different levels.

Treatment of Chemical Peel
There can be a tingling sensation, prior to the treatment. Your physician may prescribe retinoids, depending on your skin type. The process is usually short, for about 15 to 45 minutes. The skin is first cleansed in order to remove impurities from the skin. The hair and eyes are protected. The chemical is then applied at all corners of the area for treatment.
After the Treatment of Chemical Peel
In medium peels, water blisters may rupture, crust turn brownish in color and eventually peel off. Redness, flaking, or dryness will occur, which can be solved by using moisturizers. Make-up should be avoided for a few days after the treatment. You should also avoid exposing your skin to sunlight. Sunscreen should be used whenever leaving the house. Go to a reputed health caregiver who can offer you sound advice as to which peel to use, according to your skin type and your acne scars.
Medium-depth peels can be repeated every 6 to 12 months while mild peels can be repeated between one to four weeks.
